The plot shifts about a quarter into the novel, when Lynn comes into violent contact with a group of humans who operate together in the homestead. The main conflicts include Lynn’s personal battles of handling the emotions of the death of her family, finding food/adequate shelter, fighting off other ravenous humans, and fighting off dangerous wildlife. Lynn is navigating the world with only her pet dog to keep her company while fighting off dangerous predators, humans and animals alike. This society is the United States 100 years after nuclear warfare where most humans in the country died and both physical and social structures of society were completely destroyed. The novel tells the story of Lynn, a teenage girl, who is living in a post war society.
